Choosing plain garments for embroidery

Choose a blank that supports the design you want to stitch. Fabric, weight, stretch and construction all belong in the sample test.

Choose the garment and placement together

A polo, sweatshirt, fleece and cap have different surfaces and construction. Start with the intended design size and position, then inspect the supplier photographs and specification for seams, pockets and access.

Read the fabric and weight

Fabric stability and thickness affect the embroidery process. A garment’s GSM is useful context, but it does not tell you everything about stretch, knit or construction. Compare actual samples before committing to a run.

Test the stabiliser and stitch-out

Use backing, needle, thread and digitising choices appropriate to the garment and design. A sample stitch-out helps you assess puckering, coverage, feel and the reverse of the garment.

Review the finished garment

Inspect and wash-test the decorated sample in line with its care instructions. Record the style, colour, size and embroidery setup. For caps and outerwear, check the decoration area and equipment access before ordering a full batch.
